A Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) is a legal form that is used for the purpose of dividing specific types of retirement plans, including IRAs, private pension plans, savings plans, and 401(k) plans, in a divorce case. Because of the particular requirements of federal law (ERISA), a QDRO (pronounced "quadro") is the only way for the non-titled spouse (called the alternate payee) to receive a portion of the retirement account.
